THE ASSOCIATION OF ICELANDIC VISUAL ARTISTS-SIM

The Associaton of Icelandic Visual Artists (SÍM) defends the interests of Icelandic artists and functions as their trade union. SIM runs nearly 100 studios for Icelandic Artists and has 10 residency spaces for artists coming from abroad.

RESIDENCIES AND GUEST-ROOMS
SIM runs 2 residency apartments (10 rooms) and 1 guestroom apartment (3 room) situated in 3 different places in Reykjavík: In the SIM House Hafnarstræti 16, Seljavegur 32 and in Korpulfsstaðir. The residencies are applicable for Icelandic and foreign artists and the length of the stay is 1 month.
A granted residency is from the first to the last day of the relevant month, although it is not possible to arrive to the residency during nights, weekends or national holidays.
The SIM´s guest-rooms apartment is situated in the SIM House, Hafnarstræti 16. To book the guestroom contact the office by telephone (+354) 551-1346 or e-mail: sim@simnet.is. No formal application needed.
The residencies are open for application twice a year. Application deadline is April 1st for June-December same year and October 1st for January -May the following year.

SIM-HOUSE
Guest-roomThe guest-room is rented to artists, curators and others who are working in the field of visual art for 1 to 10 nights. The rooms is quite spacious with two beds. The rent is very fair compared to local prices ISK 3500.- per night, per person or ISK 5000.- per night for a couple.
Sheets, towels, water, electricity and wireless internet access is included. Smoking is not allowed indoors. Guests are required to clean the apartment and have it ready for other guests before they leave.

SELJAVEGUR
Residency
In Seljavegur 32, by the sea in the western part of Reykjavík, SIM, The Association of Visual Artists in Iceland, runs an international guest-residency. In the building, on four floors, 45-50 Icelandic artists, members of SIM, have their studios.

On the top floor, with a great view over the ocean, towards Snæfellsjökull (Snaefellsnes Glacier), the guest-apartment is situated. It has 7 double bedrooms and 4 studios for visiting artists, who can apply for a months stay.
There is a kitchen/dining/living room, shared by the residents; two toilets and two shower rooms.

7 artists stay at the same time. Each artist has his/her own private bedroom with single or double beds. There is one small private studio and 3 bigger studios that are shared. It is expected that guests honour house rules, but no other obligations are made. Residents/guests keep their own rooms/studios and the apartment clean and leave the apartment in a good and clean condition.

Seljavegur 32 is only 10 minutes walk from the old city center in Reykjavík. Close by are bus stops, food-stores, hard ware store, a swimming pool, a cinema, the university, restaurants etc.

The residence fee for 2009 a month is aprox 400 euros -shall be paid one month in advance (prior to arriving). A deposit of ISK 40.000,- should be arranged with residents credit-card information, sent to SÍM; when the resident vacates the premises, provided they are left in the same condition as upon arriving, we destroy the information.

The artists in residency can have a visitor staying with them. For a visitor staying less then 10 days a fee of 2000 ISK must be paid. For a visitor staying more than 10 days the fee is 100? (25% of the original residency fee). Children under 14 years cannot be brought to stay in the residency.

A granted residency is from the first to the last day of the relevant month, although it is not possible to arrive to the residency during nights, weekends or national holidays.

KORPULFSSTADIR
ResidencyKorpulfsstadir is in the eastern outskirt of Reykjavík, 10 km away from the City Center. The house, which was built in the years between 1925-30, was formerly one of the biggest dairy farms in Iceland. Today the house is used for various activities like artists studios, a golf club (There is a golf course outside the house) and activities for children run be the city.
The SÍM guest apartment in Korpúlfsstaðir consists of a living room (TV/ sofa), a fully equipped kitchen (refrigerator/ coffee machine / toaster / cooking machine / washing machine (etc)) and a bathroom with shower. 3 artists stay at the same time. One big studio is shared by the 3 artists/designers staying each time. Each artist has his/her own private bedroom with two beds. Internet access is available. The apartment /studio is a non-smoking area. Reykjavík bus stops in front of the house.
